Pristella
Tetra (Transparent Red Belly)
(Pristella maxillaris)
Scientific Name- Pristella maxillaris
Family: - Characin Temperature: - 23 - 28 C; 73 -
80 F PH 6.0 - 8.0 Size: 4 cm; 1.5 inches
Found in Venezuela and British Guyana, a peaceful,
schooling fish, the Pristella Tetra makes a great
addition to a Community Fish aquarium. The golden-transparent
body with silver body cavity is accented with a red
tail fin and a black band with white tip on the anal
and dorsal fins. While they can tolerate most water
parameters, lower light levels, soft water and a dark
substrate will bring out more of the colours. The
male Pristella is slender with a pointed silver swim
bladder. The female has a more rounded swim bladder
and a more plump body profile. An egg-scattering species,
the Pristella sometimes spawn randomly; some planted
areas are required to provide a place to hide/retreat
to when threatened. A common name X-Ray Tetra. Pristella
are good beginner fish. They are hardy and resistant
to temperature change and fluctuating water quality.
They do not require the soft acidic water typical
of many other tetras. Pristella are shy and
will be quite nervous among larger fish. They should
be kept in groups of 6 or more. They will school
loosely when they feel safe and tightly when they
feel threatened. Low light levels with plants
and driftwood to hide among are recommended.
Pristella eat small flake foods, spirulina flakes;
freeze dried bloodworms and frozen foods, such as
brine shrimp. Males will tend to be slimmer than females.
